#attraction/teahouse [Kazuemachi](https://www.ishikawatravel.jp/en/spots/kazuemachi-district) is a teahouse/geiko district in [[Kanazawa (金沢市)]]. > [!NOTE] Kazue-machi Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings > In the Edo period, the area around the Asanogawa Ohashi Bridge, which acted as a gateway to the castle town of Kanazawa, was a lively neighborhood bustling with people and goods. As often described within the literary works of Izumi Kyoka (novelist born in the near-by neighborhood of Shimo-shincho), by the middle of the Meiji period Kazue-machi flourished in rivalry with the Higashi (eastern) and Nishi (western) entertainment quarters. > > The teahouse buildings are characterized by their latticed wooden facades on the street level, as well as by their verandas and reception rooms on the second floor. More than a few of them have an additional third floor built after the late Meiji Period, a rare feature for traditional wooden houses. > > Even now, you can still feel the original atmosphere of the old entertainment quarter during twilight time when the river glistens with lights from lining teahouses, and flute and shamisen music floats through the air. ![[kazuemachi IMG_5119.png]] ![[? kazuemachi IMG_6873.png]] ![[kazuemachi IMG_5132.png]] ![[kazuemachi IMG_5133.png]] > [!NOTE] Kazue-Machi Ryokusui-En > This area has been called Kazue Town, popularly known as Chaya, since the Edo Period (1603-1867). This Town was named after Kazue Toda, a Kaga Feudal Clan member who lived in the area. Still characteristic of many Japanese restaurants in the area, the wood barred doors and lattice windows are a reminder of this celebrated era. > > Kazue Town, which is situated near Mount Utatsu and the Asano River, has been designated the Traditional Environment Preservation Area Kanazawa. > > This garden was built to commemorate the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Kanazawa City. In order to preserve the historical sight, the garden, including a part of the inner moat of the former Kanazawa Castle, was designed in the style of "Chisen Kaiyuu-shiki Teen (the walkway surrounds the pond)." ![[kazuemachi IMG_5127.png]] The district runs along the [Asano River (浅野川)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asano_River). ![[kazuemachi IMG_5138.png]]
