#attraction/teahouse The [Nishi Chaya District](https://www.kanazawa-kankoukyoukai.or.jp/spot/detail_10199.html) is a teahouse/[geiko (芸子)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geisha) district in [[Kanazawa (金沢市)]]. ![[nishi chaya district IMG_6664.png]] ![[nishi chaya district IMG_9429.png]] > [!NOTE] Nishi Chaya District > During the feudal era, chaya (establishments offering sake and geigi entertainment) could be found in the neighborhoods by the Saigawa-Ohashi and Asanogawa-Ohashi Bridges on the Hokkoku Kaido Road, areas that served as entrances to the castle town of Kanazawa. In the year 1820, these entertainment districts were officially authorized by the government of the Kaga Domain. Together with the Higashi Chaya District on the opposite side of the Asanogawa River, the Nishi Chaya District was officially established here, eventually becoming a lively part of the castle town. > > Although the Nishi Chaya District was burned down in its entirety by an 1880 fire, the townscape was recreated based on the traditional style of the chaya district during its heyday, including buildings along the street featuring wood lattices on their ground floors and seating areas on their second floors, and the area has remained this way ever since. Even today, as night falls in this chaya district geigi (local geisha) can be seen walking along the streets, and the sounds of flute and shamisen music drifts through the air. ![[nishi chaya district IMG_6667.png]]
