#attraction/zoo > [!IMPORTANT] This was one of [Simon's](https://www.instagram.com/skwcheng) trip highlights. [Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan](https://www.kaiyukan.com/) is an aquarium in [[Osaka (大阪市)]]. It is located next to [[Tempozan Harbor Village (天保山ハーバービレッジ)]] and is accessible via [[Tempozan Harbor-Village (天保山ハーバービレッジ)]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_5810.png]] The way this aquarium was constructed features a large glass tank. This tank is 8 stories tall, and has a walking path that winds it's way around the tank. They have different exhibits along the outside of the walking path as you walk through the aquarium, but at the same time, you get to see different animals swimming at different depths through the featured tank. You start at the top, so you can see a variety of creatures (such as [ring-tailed coati](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_American_coati) and [puffins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tufted_puffin)) that live on the surface. ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7559.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7553.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7551.png]] As you start to wind down the spiralling pathway, you get to see the variety of life in the featured tank such as [tuna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_bluefin_tuna), [manta rays](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reef_manta_ray), [whale sharks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_sharks), and other [sharks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark). ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7575.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7574.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7573.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7572.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9935.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9927.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9914.png]] There are a bunch of small exhibits as you move further down. ![[? osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9922.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9921.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7587.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9920.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7596.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9924.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7629.png]] And at the bottom, they have an exhibit featuring various types of [crabs (タカアシガニ)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_spider_crab). ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7598.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9939.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7604.png]] To represent the dark depths, they also have an exhibit filled with different types of [jellyfish (海月)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish) such as [moon jellys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurelia_aurita) and [northern sea nettle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysaora_melanaster). ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9944.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7622.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7611.png]] One of the last exhibits at the bottom featured antarctic animals, such as [penguins (ペンギン)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_rockhopper_penguin). ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9947.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_9906.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7626.png]] ![[osaka aquarium kaiyukan IMG_7562.png]] One of the things we appreciated about this aquarium was that they seems to care about sustainability (e.g. they highlighted the [Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)](https://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/oda/sdgs/index.html) as we also saw at [[Fourtreat Kusatsu]]) and animal welfare. > [!NOTE] For the happiness of animals > Have you ever wondered if aquarium animals are happy? > > Kaiyukan has been pursuing the happiness of animals by designing desirable breeding environment for animals based on the concept of animal welfare. > > What is animal welfare? > > The enrichment of creatures' lives and keeping them healthy and less stressed through various means. > > Animal welfare is evaluated based on scientific evidence and not on human emotions.
