## [[Tsukimigaoka-jinja (月見 丘神社)]] | Dainichi-goe 4 | [[Yunomine-oji (湯峯王子)]] #trail/kumano-kodo/dainichi-goe > [!NOTE] Hanakake Jizo > Hanakake Jizo is carved into the rock here. The name originates from a legendary episode between a master shrine carpenter and his apprentice. > > The master carpenter was building a three-storied pagoda in [[Cities/Yunomine Onsen (湯の峰温泉)|Yunomine Onsen]]. The two carpenters used the [[Dainichi-goe (大日越)|Dainichi-goe]] route to commute back and forth from [[Attractions/Kumano Hongu Taisha (熊野本宮大社)|Hongu]]. Every day the apprentice carpenter prepared and carried a lunch box for the master. At the top of the ridge he would take a small portion of rice and make an offering to the Jizo, praying for the successful completion of his master's pagoda. > > The master carpenter notice that there was always a small bite missing from his lunch box and assumed that the apprentice carpenter was stealing it. He set out to teach him a lesson one day. He waited on the ridge, hiding behind a large pine tree. When the apprentice sat down next to the Jizo he saw him opening the lunch box. The master pounced and struck him violently in the face. > > The apprentice fell over with pain from a broken nose. But when he suddenly looked up he was totally fine, and the Jizo had his nose knocked off, with blood running down the rock. Because of the apprentice carpenter's kindness the Jizo had protected him. This is why the Jizo is called "hanakake" or "broken nose". ![[yunomine-oji IMG_6921.png]]
